THE HEAD The human head weighs about 10 pounds and sits atop the first cervical vertebrae called the Atlas. The second cervical vertebrae is called the Axis. Both structures are designed with differences that allow different function. The Atlas allows the head to rock back and forth simulating the shaking of the head "yes". The Axis allows the head to move from side to side as when you shake your head "no".
The head must participate in the release of the clubhead and it does so in the modern swing by remaining in the middle of the shoulders throughout the entire swing. The head must be allowed to rotate as if you are shaking your head "no".
Keep Your Head Between Your Shoulders
One of the most common—and the worst—tips you’ll receive from well-meaning people is to “keep your head still”. But if you keep your head from moving you have to hang your head over your shoulder at the top of your swing like a turkey peeking over a log. You can’t complete a full shoulder turn and keeping your head riveted in its address position causes a reverse weight shift, where your weight is stranded on your left side [right for lefties] - just the opposite of where it should be.
